Fredrick Hiede is a young man who has a secret. Just outside of a city named Oleander; a world with no creativity, imagination, or art; everything is bleak and lonesome for him. He wants to be free from his prison of a home and find a way to stop the eradication of people with "Creativities". Along his journey he discovers how the world really works, but slowly he starts to show a world so grey, that a little color isn't so bad after all.
