It's been 30 years since the Taú alien exchange program. A lot went wrong, as the Taú turned out to be interested in obtaining human hearts. Laws and ethics are now no more than a faint memory. The Oracles, a group of people who farm others for the sake of survival, killed Magnus' family. Revenge seemed far fetched for Magnus, who thus decided that leaving Earth was his best option. But a run in with a fallen Taú queen, Raina, makes the idea of revenge seem more plausible.
